Prosecutor General’s Office repeatedly sends requests for legal assistance in the case of January 13th to Belarus

Continuing its investigation in respect of the conspiracy organized in 1990-1991 to overthrow the legitimate government of the Republic of Lithuania, also in respect of establishment and activities of anti-constitutional organizations in our State, and murder and grievous bodily injuries of numerous people the Prosecutor General’s Office repeatedly requests law-enforcement institutions of the Republic of Belarus to conduct acts of criminal procedure in respect of the suspects residing in this State.
„We are sending the requests for legal assistance so that the aim of closer cooperation between law-enforcement institutions expressed during the meeting of the Presidents of Lithuania and Belarus would become a new drive in the case of January 13th rather than remaining a promise,“ – said Mr. Algimantas Valantinas, Prosecutor General of the State. According to the Head of the Prosecutions Service, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Lithuania is seeking the law-enforcement institutions of the Republic of Belarus repeatedly evaluated provided documents regarding criminal acts committed in Lithuania and served the procedural documents upon the suspects, questioned them and decided on the issue of their participation during the investigation process in the Republic of Lithuania.
Prosecutor General’s Office would like to remind that the Republic of Belarus executed its requests in respect of extradition of Mykolas Burokevičius and Juozas Jermalavičius.
The case of the events of January 13th was finished and brought to the court on 19 June 1996. During the hearing in October of the same year it was decided to only hear acts of the accused persons who were in the territory of the Republic of Lithuania and to separate the material collected during pre-trial investigation in respect of the suspects who hid from investigation.
After three years of trial convictions on indictment were passed in respect of Mykolas Burokevičius, Juozas Jermalavičius, Juozas Kuolelis, Leonas Bartoševičius, Stanislovas Mickevičius, and Jaroslavas Prokopovičius guilty of participation in activities of anti-State organizations, incitement to murder defenders of freedom, and other crimes.
